Telling stories in a dark room...

Near the end of the fantasy series the Tales of the Kingdom, the spell over Enchanted City is broken and the restoration of the city has begun.  But, orphan children who used to be captured to work the Enchanter’s underground furnaces still hide in abandoned parts of the city.

Those who would rescue them must go into the dark places and woo them out, like tiny birds towards the light.

So, two would-be rescuers journey through dark alleys to a seemingly abandoned house. Inside, they sit down on the floor in the middle of a dilapidated room.

And they tell stories.

At first the soul-deadening atmosphere of the place mocks their efforts.  This is a fool's errand.  No one is even here.  The room’s shadows remain unmoved.

But, they press on telling their stories, about...

"Two brothers who escape Enchanted City to find the exiled king of their mother's tales.  An apprentice juggler who learns he doesn’t have to hide his unique gift to have a place in the juggling troupe.  A girl named Amanda who must kill the renegade dragon she herself had raised."

And with each story the room becomes brighter and warmer.  Bedraggled children begin to creep out from the shadows and gather around the storytellers. After enough stories, the children are ready to leave the cold dark room and follow the rescuers to a new life.

“It was as though all these lost children had been hiding in this dark building, just waiting for a storyteller to come along.”

Isn’t that true for everyone?

There are children (of all ages and economics) all around the world waiting to hear the stories that might lead them out of darkness.

The one place we know almost every person on the planet will go today, tomorrow and the next day is a digital device, looking for something.  Will we be there with stories that woo them towards the light?
